Hi, Harvest Hero’s
Today’s Seed Selection Tip is on Adaptation.
What does it mean, and what does it have to do with seed selection for your garden?
In biology, it means a change or the process by which an organism or species becomes better suited to its environment.
But for you, seed adaptation is essential because it contributes to the success and diversity of your garden. As a home gardener, you must select seeds well-adapted to your specific local climate and soil conditions.
For instance, if you live in dry, arid areas, choose seeds adapted to such environments. Similarly, select seeds that can withstand lower temperatures and shorter growing seasons in cooler climates.
By understanding adaptation, you can choose seeds more likely to thrive. This can lead to a more productive and sustainable garden, with plants that are better equipped to handle the local climate, soil, and other environmental factors.
Some seed packets will have a growing zone chart, and some don’t, but don’t worry, you don’t need special training to find out what grows well in your area. But you do need to know your hardiness zone.
You can visit the USDA’s website to find your hardiness zone. I recommend that you check, even if you already know your zone, because the USDA made zone changes in November 2023, and yours’ may have changed. You can click on this link to find out.

Another resource is your local cooperative extension website. There, you can also look for valuable information on growing in your area.
There’s an expression, “Right Plant, Right Place,” and that’s what adaptation is about. Be on the lookout for my next tip on Treated Seed vs. Primed. Until next time, Harvest Hero’s
