Hi, Harvest Hero’s,
Seeds can be stored for years and, in some cases, centuries. Lotus seeds found in the pyramids were germinated in 1966. There have been more recent accounts of ancient seeds being propagated, too. They all share that the stored conditions give credence to a seed’s longevity and viability.
๐๐ข๐๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ is the proportion of seed in a lot capable of germinating. ๐๐จ๐ง๐ ๐๐ฏ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ is a measure of how long a seed remains viable. Both are determined by how well the seed is stored.
Lucky for us, we don’t need a stone tomb to store our seed effectively. But, if we take the lesson by storing seeds in a dry, low-temperature environment, seeds will retain their viability and longevity.
๐๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐๐ ๐ You can store your seed in their packets in a glass jar or a tightly sealed plastic container. You can keep seeds in a cool spot and out of sunlight, such as in a closet, but remember: A 1% decrease in moisture and a 10-degree temperature drop in storage doubles the life of seeds. Your refrigerator can provide ideal conditions for seed storage. Never freeze seeds.
๐๐๐ฉ๐๐๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ and seed gluttony (OK, full disclosure, I’m guilty of this) is when you over-order and over-plant. Understanding your storage and growing capacity is important.
๐๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ High-quality plants begin with high-quality seeds. But they cost a lot nowadays. To overcome this, consider purchasing with your friends and splitting the cost. Divide the packages between you and grow the seeds youโre given.
Once they become seedlings, divide, and trade with each other. This way, you can have a variety of plants that your sowing space couldn’t allow.
This concludes my seed tips, and hopefully, you’ve gained some knowledge nuggets that you didn’t have before and helped you in your seed selection ventures.
Until next time, Harvest Hero’s
๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐!
